Cheese factory ‘De Tijd’

By 24-12-2014

Our Queen Máxima has recently opened the cheese factory ‘De Tijd’ of CONO cheese makers in Westbeemster, designed by Bastiaan Jongerius Architects. The Beemster polder has the status of World Heritage. The requirement of the assessment committee, led by former Chief Government Architect Tjeerd Dijkstra, was that that the building should fit in perfectly with the surrounding landscape.

Grandeur and pride: it is part of the Beemster. As a cycling young boy, Jongerius was already fascinated by the characteristic Beemster landscape, and he has now used generous dimensions to express this pride. As such, a plentiful spaciousness is created.

The low, tall cheese factory ties in with geometrical polder and refers to the synergy of traditional Dutch farmhouses and the surrounding scenery. The building was placed deep on the lot so it looks smaller from the road. There is balance between the facets of construction, daylight and scenery. Sustainability is central to the new cheese factory.
