Community school Houthaven

By 02-09-2015

The design for the community school by Marlies Rohmer is inspired by the Amsterdam School style of architecture. The building houses two pre-existing primary schools, a day care centre, out-of-school care, business areas and a restaurant. The flexible design allows for optimal use of the building’s space: for instance, the school’s auditoriums can be combined to create one large area.

The building looks robust from the outside, yet it is light and spacious on the inside. Above the auditorium there is a gym with open windows and roof windows. Also striking are the patio and the large terrace on the west facade.

The school has been built according to the ‘Fresh School’ Class A standard, and the building is energy neutral thanks to sustainably generated district heating and cooling, a highly durable shell, and photovoltaic solar panels on the roof that provide the remaining energy needs.
