Museumplein Limburg

By 26-01-2016

Two new visitors’ facilities have been added to the existing Discovery Center Continium in Kerkrade: Cube and Columbus. Kerkrade can now pride itself on having the first design museum in the Netherlands and the first reverse planetarium in Europe respectively.

The design offers space to a ‘museum without boundaries’, a kind of interactive workshop where the visitors are not regarded as spectators but participants. In addition to exhibition spaces, there are shared facilities for conferences, events, workshops and education.

The design by Shift Architecture Urbanism from Rotterdam consists of an urban planning ensemble of clearly recognizable volumes connected by an underground landscape. The sunken inner courtyard of the existing museum runs underneath the entire new development. It connects the old and the new and provides access to all facilities.

Shift Architecture Urbanism is a Rotterdam-based design studio for architecture and urban planning that connects spatial work and project-specific interventions on a wide scale. The office was founded in 2005 by Harm Timmermans and Oana Radeş. In 2010, Thijs van Bijsterveldt joined the design office as a partner.
