The Market Hall

By 18-11-2014

The multifunctional Market Hall in Rotterdam, designed by architectural firm MVRDV under supervision of Winy Maas (‘When you’re standing inside, you especially experience the spaciousness’), has already become a major attraction.

Being the first indoor food market of the Netherlands, it combines the functionalities of a market hall with living and it was inspired by food markets in Stockholm, Barcelona and Valencia. Food, in all of its forms, is central to the market. The ground floor is the size of a large soccer field. The hall consists of a large arc and is 40 metres (131 feet) tall. The necessary logistics that accompany the market are hidden under the ground floor. The Market Hall’s open characteristics are designed to attract a large public. Draught and rain were not allowed to stand a chance, so the ends are closed with transparent cablenet facades.

The artwork on the inside of the arch, ‘Horn of Plenty’, is, with its size of 11.000 m2 (118.400 sq. ft.), the largest work of art in The Netherlands.
