Rotterdam’s Supercube

By 26-12-2014

The ‘Supercube’, located at the entrance of the neighbourhood with tilted cube houses, has finally got a new destination. Commissioned by housing cooperative Woonbron, Personal Architecture BNA has developed housing for (ex-) detainees here. The functions envisioned by the new tenant Exodus have been turned around and fitted into architect Piet Blom’s original design. The offices are now at ground level. Local residents now see ‘eyes in the streets’, which is good for the sense of security. The load-bearing, solid concrete pillar in the middle of the building has been replaced with an open central staircase. It’s a meeting point for the inhabitants. The 36-feet high open space carries daylight to the lower floors as well. The Supercube project has been nominated for the Gouden Piramide (‘Golden Pyramid’), an annual state prize for inspiring commissioning work in architecture, landscape design and urban planning.
