Who Owns The Street?

By 07-03-2016

Who Owns The Street? is an ambitious project which poses some of the  urgent questions of our time: who uses, abuses, controls and manages our public space? Who is the owner and which responsibilities are linked to this ownership? The Van Abbemuseum has invited Crimson architectural historians, Bureau ZUS, !Melk and Jan Rothuizen to share their vision on an aspect of the use of public space in the Netherlands and other parts of the world.

This resulted in four totally different approaches: the public space as a place for protest (Crimson), a typology of a hundred different streets (ZUS), the design of a public environment on The Strip in Las Vegas (!Melk) and the project Refugee Republic, about everyday life in a Syrian refugee camp in northern Iraq (Rothuizen). These contributions are presented in the tower of the Van Abbemuseum and include references to the legendary 1972 Van Abbemuseum exhibition The Street. The exhibition also has a ‘dynamic’ part, where relevant side projects will be added and replaced during the course of the exhibition. They will serve to supplement and update the core presentation and to comment or question it. Exhibition design by Can & Asli Altay (Future Anecdotes Istanbul).

Debates / Lectures
In addition there will be a series of debates and lectures in the museum organised in cooperation with the Eindhoven Architecture Centre and the subjects of the exhibition will be further explored online, on a special part on the museum’s website.
