Rick Berkelmans

Rick Berkelmans is an illustrator and print maker. He lives and works in Breda, where he runs his one-man studio called Hedof. His work is a mix of smart shapes, weird characters and strong colors. He works for clients from all over the world, such as Google, Ikea, Facebook, KLM and The New York Times.

Lotte World Mall
For Lotte World Mall, one of the largest shopping centers in Asia, Rick was asked to make illustrations for the winter campaign. He developed a large, detailed illustration representing the winter feeling in a universal way. The Korean TIST agency created a campaign around it which consists of a huge illustration on the outside facade, several three-dimensional shop windows, an animation, banners, and sculptures throughout the entire shopping center, with the highpoint being a three-dimensional set-up in the middle of the complex that people can walk through and where children can play with the penguins.

Royal Arena in Copenhagen
Via the Danish Studio Art Rebels, Rick was asked to create a series of murals at the main entrance of the brand new Royal Arena in Copenhagen. Rick had already gained experience with large murals (KLM project, Lisbon), but this was a real challenge, especially because he had to complete the job in just one week. With two assistants, Joren Joshua and Ilse Weisfelt, he managed to finish the work in 8 days of 12 hours. The design is based on the good Danish life with elements of Copenhagen, its inhabitants, the music, the hotel and catering industry (Royal is a large Danish beer brand), sports, nature, and places of interest.
