3 x Schrofer

By 11-10-2018

The one-day exhibition ‘Wine, Wool and Voluptuous women’ at Studio Schrofer in The Hague offered a nice mix of history, color combinations, shapes and compositions. Van Frans Schrofer presented current furniture designs as well as carpet designs inspired by the graphic art of his brother Jurriaan Schrofer. In addition there were nude paintings and charcoal drawings by their father Willem Schrofer. Studio Schrofer is located in a historic warehouse from 1934 in the center of The Hague, built in the style of De Nieuwe Zakelijkheid.

Willem Schrofer (1898-1968) was a true Renaissance man. He was a prolific artist, beloved teacher at the Royal Academy of Art, and a researcher and experimenter in many styles. His earliest abstract paintings date from the late 1920’s. During his career he befriended modern art greats like Moholy-Nagy, El Lissitzky, Mondriaan and Klee. Through those friendships, Willem came to understand the communist ideologies that were the foundation of Constructivism and Bauhaus.

Jurriaan Schrofer (1926-1990) was born into a family of artists. The restless lecturer, artist, designer, polymath and co-founder of Total Design, designed for prestigious clients such as the Stedelijk Museum, Hoogovens, Bijenkorf and PTT. As director of the art academy in Arnheim, Jurriaan set the conditions for change in the art education system by encouraging a broad, socially oriented program.

Frans Schrofer is a furniture designer working with international luxury and lifestyle brands, including Leolux from The Netherlands, Durlet from Belgium, Molinari and Natuzzi from Italy, BoConcept and Bolia from Denmark, Rolf-Benz and Koinor from Germany, and Artisan from Bosnia-Herzogvina. Studio Schrofer combines craftsmanship and tradition with modern technology.

The exhibition was organized in collaboration with The Wool Studio.
