Recycling

By 10-04-2022

Nominee DuPho. SO Award 2022

“I am a photographer with a preference for architecture and urban landscape images. In the distant past I worked as an Art Director, and the graphic side and its applications can also be recognised and found in my photos.

The idea for the series ‘recycling’ came about when I once saw cardboard lying around in the rubbish that looked like a building. After a few months of collecting cardboard and a shed full of material, I started experimenting in the studio and to my own surprise had built a city in two days. The identical colours of the buildings and the search for, and application of, the right light made you feel as if you were in a city in Lebanon. And all that by freely fiddling with packaging materials and then seeing the image emerge that I had hoped for and strived for and to see it grow. It gives me a great sense of wonder.

The special thing is that through design, camera angle and light, you can transform things in your imagination into a temple in Egypt, a brutalist building from the 1960s or a city in Lebanon.”

“Raymond has looked at an ordinary product in a very different way. He has managed to see beautiful architecture in waste. It is a technical tour de force.”
