Above Sea Level

By 22-04-2020

Klaas Kuiken and Cor Unum developed the new collection Above Sea Level together. The collection Above Sea Level consists of three vases and a side table and is the result of a unique collaboration. Klaas Kuiken has a fascination for material transformations, Cor Unum has more than 65 years of experience in producing ceramics. These two worlds come together in this new project.

For the collection polystyrene models have been transformed into porcelain vases and a table. The structure of the mold remains clearly visible in the end result which is an amazing collection of ceramics reminiscent of giant icebergs. The items are therefore named after existing icebergs, so there is the B-15, the C-19, the B-9 and the D-28.

Klaas Kuiken previously worked with polystyrene models that were transformed into a series of cast iron stoves and a series of glass lamps. With Above Sea Level, Klaas Kuiken’s search for alternative materials for molds is followed up. Cor Unum’s knowledge, skills, craftsmanship and years of experience provide a refined result in which the robust models are very accurately converted into delicate porcelain products.
