AIGA selects Dog and Pony for 50 books | 50 covers

By 24-06-2021

The American Institute for Graphic Arts (AIGA) has named the cover design for the title Grid by Amsterdam-based design studio Dog and Pony as one of the best 50 covers of 2020.

The design was selected from almost 700 submissions from 36 countries. The jury judged the designs on the integrated design approach of each work, including concept, innovation and visual elements such as typography, illustration and/or information design.

For the design of the Dutch edition of Grid by British author Nick Cook, published by AW Bruna Uitgevers, Dog and Pony took an unusual approach in the thriller genre: a purely typographic composition.

From the jury report
“Unexpected cover for a THRILLER with its all-type infinity mirror. Interesting that the author’s name doesn’t appear on the cover but the word THRILLER does.” Paul Sahre, jury member AIGA’s 50 Books / 50 covers 2021

The authoritative design institute AIGA has been awarding prizes to the best 50 book designs in the world since 1923. In doing so, AIGA stimulates high-quality and powerful design in a conventional but still very popular form of expression: the book. As the focus shifted to design for book covers as well, the competition evolved into its current form: 50 Books | 50 Covers. The winning selection of 2020 will be included in the AIGA Design Archives – a permanent historical collection of outstanding graphic design – and in the Rare Book and Manuscript Library at Columbia University in New York.
