“I like photos that tell a story and take you to another world. My work is poetic, mysterious and sometimes quite dark.”

“I graduated from the Photo Academy as an autonomous-illustrative photographer with digital work, but not long after that I lost my heart to a wooden dry plate camera from 1880. The paper negatives and the uncorrected lenses add an extra dimension to the images: they are no longer just about space, but also about time. Look at these pictures and you look at the past.”

“In spite of the nostalgic atmosphere of the images, my photos have become more critical by working with an old camera. The series ‘Zoo’, for example, has a 19th century appearance that instantly makes it clear how old-fashioned and anachronistic zoos actually are. The series ‘Wad’ (Mudflat) reflects on the consequences of the rising sea levels. If the water keeps rising at the current rate, the Wadden Islands may in fifty years’ time be just a childhood memory or a picture in an old photo album.”

“Alongside my autonomous work I’m also a photographer for theater group Mugmetdegoudentand.”

Photos from Wad are for purchase at Galerie Sehnsucht in Rotterdam
