The Anti Chair Movement

By 01-10-2020

The Anti Chair Movement strives to liberate the object of its proposed function.

Hanneke Klaver & Tosca Schift both studied Product Design at ArtEZ in Arnhem. After graduation they joined forces as design duo Ant Eye. They have a shared interest in the relationship between man and object. They use film and performance to show the life of objects.

Hanneke and Tosca: “A chair is an archetypical object within the design landscape. Chairs seem to be objects for sitting on, but they are used in many ways and for different purposes. People have the creativity to find new functions. While a chair is often associated with physical passivity, it can also make people move.”

“The Anti Chair Movement resulted in a collection of dance chairs that came to life in a film. We asked one of them to dance. To move with a chair is to actively engage with the object. We firmly believe that objects reflect the way we treat them. If we look at the, with different eyes, we can build long-term relationships with objects.”
