Bamboo

By 24-01-2021

Bamboo is a very versatile material, it is exceptionally strong and it has characteristic shape properties. How is it possible then that bamboo and especially raw bamboo is nowadays only used in contemporary products in a limited way?

Ten years ago, Yksi Design participated in the Dutch Design meets Bamboo project organized by MOSO International. A number of bamboo products originated from this enterprise, one of which was the Contour Chair. Yksi Design has now 10 years later again started working with bamboo to investigate which other qualities of the material can be used. This research has resulted in two new designs for bamboo tables which originated from two different approaches. The designs have been realized into prototypes in collaboration with MOSO International, Bamboo Import Europe and Van Zon Interior Design.

The Construc-Table is inspired by existing compounds from the bamboo architecture, with a frame that uses the structural qualities of bamboo. The starting point is the triangular construction of the table legs in which the bamboo material is connected with the table blade in an innovative way. The combination of the bamboo and the powder-coated steel connecting elements give the table a sleek industrial look with a gentle character.

The Arch-Table is the result of a search for innovative design possibilities with bamboo. By cutting out bamboo stems with a contour and combining them, interesting cave-like shapes are created in the table legs. This makes the interior visible and incorporates the normally hidden forms of bamboo in the product. The legs and the blade are invisibly interconnected. The bamboo stems are turned down to an accurate size and seamlessly connected to the blade through a tight fit. This makes the inside of the bamboo also visible on the top of the table.
