Bio-Textiles at World Expo Dubai

By 24-03-2022

Buro Belén was invited to conduct their research and material manifestations for the Dutch pavilion DutchDubai, a biotope in which circular climate systems reflect in Dutch innovative solutions. From October 1st 2021 until 31st March 2022, the Dutch pavilion featues two designs by Belén. A large Curtain that is able to gracefully separate the space and a Canopy in front of a facade where visitors can stand (under) to enter the pavilion. The Curtain and Canopy are made out of 100% bio textiles developed together with partner research institutes.

Curtain
The Curtain is a large pleated fabric of 44-meter wide and 14-meter long, containing a refined lasered technique. The material of the fabric based on PLA is of renewable source. The native vegetation of Dubai, ranging from the date palms, moringa, mangrove and oleander amongst others, reflects back in the design of the intricate laser-cut Curtain. This vegetation was once the source of fossil-based materials. Belén used these as imagery to reflect the compelling history of the UAE. The Curtain textile is made out of a renewable and plant-based source that can be recycled. It beams warmth and comfort in contrast to the structured sheet piles of the pavilion. Herein, the studio opted for a human touch through a tactility and softness.

Canopy
The Canopy consists out of a newly developed bio textile based on the PLA material, which offers a sustainable alternative to polyester and has a high UV-fastness. It promotes a longer life span under the sun compared to synthetic options. This material was carefully conceptualised and executed by Belén, promoting less consumption and durability in products to enrich the environment.
