Black and white and (some) kind of blue

By 03-06-2017

Annaleen Louwes (1959) lives and works in Amsterdam. She studied photography at the Rietveld Academy in Amsterdam. After her studies she also worked for a long period of time as a teacher at the Rietveld. In addition to working on commission for various cultural institutions and magazines, she also works as an autonomous visual artist. In her work Louwes concentrates on the frailty and transience of the human existence and the ways in which these make themselves manifest to a varying extent.

The Dolhuys I (Museum of the Mind) presents her photo exhibition ‘Black and white and (some) kind of blue or I only want to be happy’; penetrating images that Louwes creates as an artist-in-residence on a psychiatry department in New York.

At the start of her three-month stay, Louwes realized that she didn’t only enter the world of psychiatry, but also a primarily black community. “I didn’t just feel an intruder, but also an outsider,” Louwes said. She manages to close this gap in an innovative way. She turned the color negatives of her models around and discovered that on a negative both a light and a dark skin color take on a very nice blue color.
