Winner DuPho. SO Award 2022

Anne Claire de Breij (Naarden, 1984) is a photographer generally known to be an alluring perfectionist. A graduate of the Royal Academy of Art The Hague, her work is always highly stylistic, static whilst full of life and incredibly recognizable. With her trademark use of colour and a highly graphic character, Anne Claire’s clear-cut images play with the boundaries between reality and fiction. Renowned for pushing the perimeters of aesthetics, she is considered a pioneer in her field and is one of the most sought-after photographers in the area.

Lending her visual style to a range of brands and initiatives, Anne Claire has been fully devoted to the craft for over a decade. Driven by aesthetics, she’s passionate about creating images that are pleasing to the eye whilst still being surprisingly layered. Her work is frequently seen in Volkskrant Magazine and has been exhibited in Photography Museum Huis Marseille Amsterdam, FOAM and EYE, amongst others. In 2013 she published her first photo book Dutch Championsand in the fall of 2022 her second photography book The Mukade And The Mountain will be published, with images created in Japan during an artist in residency.

Jury
“Anne Claire de Breij makes almost real life photo collages, trendsetting photography. Her use of colour is fantastic, the composition always fun and there is never a lack of humour. She moves on the border of reality and fiction and the images carry a twist or alienation with them. The layering makes the photography permanently interesting.”
