Feest. Ed van der Elsken

By 27-11-2020

Around 1960 Ed van der Elsken (1925-1990) compiled a photo book on the theme of feest (feast). He drew on old and new work and made a design that is a succession of festive events: fun, cheering, dance, music, carnival, fairground attractions, carnival, excitement and ecstasy, but also drunkenness and exhaustion in the late hours. He combined the individual photos into sparkling and rhythmic pairs, making the fun splash off the pages. For reasons unknown, back then the design was left on the shelf.

The design for the feast was one of the big surprises in Van der Elsken’s legacy that the Rijksmuseum and the Netherlands Photo Museum acquired in 2019. Sixty years after the photographer had worked on the design with scissors and adhesive tape, the vibrant  book has now been published on the format that he envisioned.
