Circular Department Store – Glass

By 12-01-2021

New roads to reuse
With an annual collection of 2.8 million kg of goods, Foundation Kringloopbedrijf Het Warenhuis in Leiden is one of the largest in the Netherlands. Designers Jurgen Bey, Nienke Hoogvliet, Max Lipsey and Fraser McPhee are invited to investigate one of the waste streams that are not sold or recycled. Their product will be produced in the social workshops of the recycling company. Today we show the design of  Studio Makkink & Bey.

Studio Makkink & Bey
For the Circular Department Store, Jurgen Bey focuses on developing a work process to shape the new product. He developed a set of drinking glasses with a total of 70 liters of water, the amount of water in his body. These glasses are engraved with little refined drawings of organs from the body. These drawings are embroidered in one piece on a matching tablecloth that can also be sold at the set. Each glass retains something of its history and individuality, but at the same time with the other glasses forms a collection or set that tells the complete story.
