Milano – Correction in the design market

By 13-06-2022

Looking back at Salone del Mobile 2022 by David Heldt

Italy lived up to its name last week, high temperatures, delicious food and when it cooled down in the evening the streets filled up around presentations, restaurants and of course Bar Basso. During the day, everywhere remained a bit quieter than before.

Last year the Salone del Mobile took place in September, and this year it took place in June. Both were different from each other. More subdued. A large number of companies and designers played it safe and skipped a year. Some companies started presenting more locally during the pandemic and continued that strategy for another year.

The question is whether they will continue to do so. There were companies in the last 10 years that felt compelled to unpack in Milan because their customers expected it of them, but financially it yielded little. You could call it the bubble in the design market, and corona brought correction in that. Does this mean that if the pandemic indeed does not reappear, and the fair in 2023 takes place in April as usual, the salone will remain smaller? And what role does the war in Ukraine play in this?

We are going to experience it. One thing I can say for sure is that in April the temperatures will be a lot more bearable.
