Crossing Europe

By 20-04-2016

In his project ‘Crossing Europe’, Dutch photographer Poike Stomps took pictures of people crossing busy intersections in 42 capital cities of Europe.

Poike Stomps: “The photos give a glimpse of each city’s atmosphere and capture the general vibe of European life. Besides giving a taste of Europe, I hope the project makes you more aware how great, big, strange and special we are, in spite of all the easy judgements we’ve developed. After all, the simple scene of pedestrians crossing a street is familiar around the world, revealing our similarities while also highlighting our individual peculiarities.”

“I made the series because I was curious about who we Europeans are and I wanted to see it with my own eyes – not disturbed by opinions easily adapted from the press or other people’s experiences.”

“Europe is on the move. Every day it is more uncertain where we’re going as a continent, with shifting borders and problems. What I did was to meet people, and herein lies the solution: look with an open view and make an effort to meet each other.”

The book ‘Crossing Europe’ was self-published by Poike Stomps and is available through his website.
