Currents

By 11-04-2023

Claudy Jongstra has her first solo exhibition in Spain: Galeria Aina Nowack in Madrid presents no less than 20 artworks by Studio Claudy Jongstra (Feb. 22 to May 17, 2023) in an atmospheric domestic setting.

The mini-oeuvre exhibition titled ‘Currents’ includes specially created new artworks such as ‘The Sea Around’ (2023), an unblemished natural landscape surrounded by an intensely blue ocean. In addition, Jongstra presents more abstract, graphic works titled ‘Shades of Walnut’ and ‘Shades of Neutrals’ (2023) in more sober tones. But also earlier work such as the extraordinary series ‘Burgundian Black’ from 2021 and ‘Reeping Rhubarb’ from 2022.

All artworks are made with respect for and in collaboration with nature according to an ethical production chain that is circular and transparent. The felted wool of the special local Drentse heath sheep is dyed in local spring water with local plants growing on fertile soil. This is what makes the indigo blue of the woad plant so intense, the pink of rhubarb so soft, the black in the eponymous ‘Burgundian Black’ series so layered in color, and onion skins, carrot tops and walnut shells provide shimmering natural hues that artificial colors can never match. All together, the wool-felted monumental artworks offer the distinctive vibrant hues that have made Studio Claudy Jongstra famous worldwide.
