Dd, Dutch designers Yearbook 2021

By 02-12-2021

The BNO publishes the second edition of Dd, Dutch designers Yearbook. A year of Dutch design in one book: from award-winning design to iconic designers. Discover the inventiveness of designers in a tumultuous year again determined by corona, and the value of cross-disciplinary design for the challenges of tomorrow.

Dutch designers are known worldwide for their originality and versatility, and are increasingly manifesting themselves as social workers, storytellers, activists or performers; the profession has few boundaries. Design is everywhere and the world seems makeable. However, the past year has taught us that social engineering is relative. Climate change, our greatest threat, spoke globally and literally through the elements: water flowed abundantly, air remained polluted, earth impoverished and fire scorched. How do we see the world of tomorrow and how can designers contribute to answers to the pressing social, economic and environmental challenges the world faces?

Dd Yearbook ‘Horizons’ describes the design year 2021 and looks ahead to the proverbial dot on the horizon. Or rather horizons, too far to see sharply, or on the contrary bright and seemingly close. The book provides a candid look at what designers are thinking and making now: through essays by Jeroen van Erp and Praveen Sewgobind, surprising final exam work from Dutch design schools, award-winning design cases, the development trajectory Driving Dutch Design, and interviews with Kossmanndejong (World Expo Dubai 2021), sustainability pioneers Babette and Rick Porcelijn, gamechanging fashion label BYBORRE, Ludwig Volbeda (Gouden Penseel 2021) and activist designer Ruben Pater, among others. We can move on to 2022. And beyond.

This book is an initiative and production of the BNO, and is published in collaboration with nai010 publishers. Dutch designers Yearbook is distributed free of charge to designers and agencies affiliated with the BNO. The book will be available from 11 December in bookstores and online via bno.nl/dd and nai010.com. The book will also be launched during the Design Digger Live event at Pakhuis de Zwijger on 25 January 2022.
