De Houtbouw Revolutie

By 11-10-2021

Fred Schoorl, Thijs Kroese and Jan van Barneveld received the first copies of the book De Houtbouw Revolutie (The Wood Building Revolution) Thursday in Lloyd hotel Amsterdam. They received the book from authors Pablo van der Lugt and Atto Harsta, who were commissioned by publisher MaterialDistrict to write the book with the aim of encouraging Dutch architects, developers, governments and investors to build more in wood on their way to a circular future.

The application possibilities of wood in construction seem endless and technological developments are still following each other in rapid succession. If The Wood Building Revolution teaches us anything, it is that building with wood is the future. The book deals attractively with the many applications of this sustainable building material, especially in the field of new building systems based on solid wood products such as Cross Laminated Timber (CLT), Laminated Veneer Lumber (LVL) and Glued Laminated Timber (Glulam). Thanks to these developments, wood is now a serious replacement for concrete and steel in construction.

The Wood Building Revolution is divided into six chapters, covering topics including the transition to a ‘biobased’ economy, climate change in relation to forestry, the characteristics of timber, innovative developments in the field of timber as a building material, designing and building with solid timber and a look to the future. The informative text is enriched with enlightening infographics and photographs of appealing wood projects.

The Wood Building Revolution is a must for every Dutch building professional; the authors dispel a number of myths about building with wood once and for all. Wood, as Van der Lugt and Harsta write, is – if properly applied – no more dangerous to fire or more expensive than conventional building materials. They also show, using numerous examples, that wooden buildings can last for hundreds of years and that there is enough forest to build much more with wood in a responsible way. And finally, wood construction ensures an enormous reduction in CO2 emissions compared to building with non-renewable materials. What’s more: building with wood even results in an enormous CO2 storage. This makes it a sustainable and future-proof building material.

About the authors
Dr. ir. Pablo van der Lugt is senior sustainability consultant in the wood and bamboo industry and quartermaster biobased building at TU Delft (Environmental Technology & Design) and AMS Institute. Previously he wrote ‘Booming Bamboo’, also published by MaterialDistrict.

Ir. Atto Harsta is an independent innovation consultant for the building sector and architecture with over twenty years of experience, focused on accelerating the transition to a healthy and circular built environment.
