De Ploeg, Bergeijk – Renovation in Style

By 19-03-2018

The factory for De Ploeg in the Dutch village of Bergeijk was built between 1956 and 1960. Here, De Ploeg used to produce its world-renowned fabrics. It is the only industrial building that Gerrit Rietveld designed in his career. That alone makes Weverij De Ploeg an exceptional building.

The factory complex is part of an extensive domain, designed by the famous landscape architect Mien Ruys. De Ploeg’s management − adherents of socialist ideals – found it important that the factory workers should be able to work and relax in a green environment. Based on this premise, the park and the factory building form a single architectural entity. The Ploegpark has been proclaimed as one of the most important open-air monuments of functionalist architecture in the Netherlands. Both are designated national monuments.

After De Ploeg left, the building was renovated and sold to Bruns exhibition developers. Its renovation was completed 100 years after the foundation of De Stijl. Gerrit Rietveld was part of the De Stijl movement and the design of the De Ploeg complex was inspired by the conceptual thinking of De Stijl.
