De Waalhoven Nijmegen

By 31-01-2021

Team KCAP together with Barcode Architects and Lodewijk Baljon Landschapsarchitecten are designing De Waalhoven Nijmegen for VanWonen/BPD.

De Waalhoven offers Nijmegen the opportunity to realize a new residential area with a strong focus on community building. The design team developed an urban district with an integrated approach of urban planning, landscape design and architecture with a particular focus on the natural environment.

The urban design concept for approximately 570 dwellings is in line with the unique dike and river landscape, the development of the suburb ‘de Waalsprong’ and the History of Nijmegen. De Waalhoven offers Nijmegen the opportunity to create a new residential area with a strong focus on community building.

The former agricultural destination of the area with its orchards, an old farm and the water-related infrastructure are carriers of the identity of this new development. The garden clusters are positioned on small hills that refer to the mound, an artificial hill that enables the construction above the waterline. At the same time, stepped residential buildings are placed directly on the dike profile, with a view overlooking the river. By embedding the level difference between dike and hinterland, a varied and lively landscape is created for all residents between the buildings, in which vegetable gardens, greenhouses and playgrounds for children are included. Moreover twenty barn houses also refer to the former rural destination of the area.
