Dear Data

By 05-10-2019

Dear Data is a collection of 104 handmade postcards by designers Stefanie Posavec & Giorgia Lupi.

How often you swear, how much time you spend on your phone, how much clothing you own and how much of it you actually wear. Pretty much everything you do, see or experience in a day can be converted into data. And that exactly is the thought behind self-initiated project ‘Dear Data’ by designers and friends Stefanie Posavec (UK) and Giorgia Lupi (USA). For a year they send each other weekly data visualisation postcards from their homes in London and New York.

At the start of every week, through sms, the decided what topic they would visualise that week, each in their own, handmade way. The challenge wasn’t just the visualisation, but also deciding on the topic ánd collecting te data. Counting became a daily ritual, everything was measured and visualised.

The 104 handmade postcards were collected in the fascinating book Dear Data, that doesn’t just show their artistic development, but also the growth of their friendship.

An exhibition of all 104 postcards is on display at Graphic Matters in Breda, from September 20th until October 27th. Stephanie will also host a masterclass during the festival and speak about ‘handcrafted data’ at her Artist Talk and at an edition of talkshow Talking Matters.
