Desiging Lightness – structures for saving energy

By 14-04-2020

Designing Lightness offers a new perspective on lightness and the ways the world can benefit from it. Lightness is not so much about weight reduction, but about reconsidering structures, assembling composite materials and learning from the past. These values are not only reflected in the content of the book by Ed van Hinte and Adriaan Beukers, they are also visualized by the design of Studio Renate Boere.

The green desert
How do you visualize the possible results of the lighting solutions of Ed van Hinte and Adriaan Beukers? When conceptualizing the larger idea of Designing Lightness, the designers soon enough concluded that green should become the required color of this book. Green, the ultimate symbolic color for natural phenomena and durability, is the binding factor in Designing Lightness; a guiding principle that binds both the textual and the visual content of the book.

To express the importance of responsibility when designing sustainable products, Studio Renate Boere designed a symbol that acts as the visual translation of the term Designing Lightness. A benchmark, pontifical on the front cover of the book, for any design that saves energy in all the different ways that Designing Lightness proposes. The multitude of lightness options is depicted as a tower, composed of open structured, balloon-shaped compartments.

A large part of Designing Lightness revolves around the use of composite materials. The cover design of the publication consists of an original composite composition, made of layered foil prints representing possible solutions for the future. A green desert suggests a warning message; are we on the way towards transforming the earth into a great desert or is it going to be a green oasis?
