The Super Tree Club www.thedesignpilgrim.com

How design buying makes the world greener

By 13-10-2022

Launch of The Super Tree Club at Dutch Design Week (DDW) Eindhoven at Piet Hein Eek

The Super Tree Club is a new collaboration of The Design Pilgrim Foundation with young designers. The foundation is committed to planting trees through design and art. The designers will soon sell new designs related to trees at Piet Hein Eek at DDW22. Forest will be planted from the proceeds.

The step from being fascinated by trees to contributing to planting them was small. It is clear as crystal: the world needs more trees, for a better climate and more biodiversity. A year ago, The Design Pilgrim wrote ‘Nature Notes’. From all proceeds of this book, we plant new forest. Now there is The Super Tree: a project consisting of small tree sculptures are designed from ‘found’ and used material. Trees made to eventually plant a forest. Design and art stimulate the imagination. Especially now, with climate change, we can obviously put that to good use. Meanwhile, a curated selection of enthusiastic designers and artists have joined this project: The Super Tree Club. This Club is on a mission: plant as many trees as possible! So that we can continue to see the forest through all the trees in the future….

Participating designers
The designers will also jointly present their new collection at DDW ’22. Sustainable designs that have been thought about. Made in the Netherlands, with the intention of reducing negative environmental impact.

Iris Lucia – Iris’ designs are 3D sketched in bioplastics. With pen, she draws the lines in space. A futuristic craft where each object is unique. It literally explores the limits of design and raises questions about consumption: How much matter do we need? Can we create a lighter life with less material/ stuff? www.irislucia.com

Emma Hoogstede – Emma designs and makes the collection in her workshop in the heart of Rotterdam. They are colourful objects in ceramics and silicone. “Life is serious enough, we better surround ourselves with multifunctional playful objects,” is Emma Hoogstede’s motto. www.emmahoogstede.com

Fleur Peters – Fleur is fascinated by the effect and reflection of light. She makes interior objects from coloured glass. In her designs, she uses residual materials, recycled glass and found objects. She combines craftsmanship with innovative techniques to create new forms. www.studiofleurpeters.nl

The Design Pilgrim – A clothes peg, ball of wool or an old ladle get a second life as a tree. 150 trees fresh from the studio combine to form a small special forest. “The project is reminiscent of a contemporary interpretation of ‘objets trouvés’ by the artist Marcel Duchamp, topical by addressing one of the most important issues of our time: climate change.” The Design Pilgrim Foundation is a non-profit foundation dedicated to planting trees through design and art. www.thedesignpilgrim.com / www.thesupertree.com
