Design Indaba 2017

By 04-03-2017

Design Indaba is an annual international festival and ‘social impact do tank’ in South Africa. Design Indaba inspires people to create a better future through design and creativity.

Design Indaba has become a respected institution in the global creative landscape based on its annual festival that has attracted and showcased the world’s brightest talent since 1995. Their offering has been broadened with an online design publication, which features the best of the world’s creativity and attracts over half a million visitors each year. Through these channels Design Indaba champions noteworthy design and creative projects.

Katja Lucas (Dutch Design Week) attended the conference in Capetown from 1-3 March 2017 and reports on the talk that was given by Dutch artists and filmmakers Lernert & Sander, architect and urban designer Winy Maas and critical designer Isabel Mager.

Lernert & Sander
“With their cheeky sense of humor Lernert & Sander told about the copycats of their highly conceptual films. Lernert & Sander said they are not sad, angry or disappointed. They quoted Gandhi, Mandela, etc. to show forgiveness and even gave the copycats a platform during their performance by showing their pictures and names. At the end of the presentation a choir sang the text of an e-mail that was sent live to all the copycats. Hilarious! The audience rewarded the speakers with a standing ovation.”

Winy Maas
“Architect and urban designer Winy Maas is a co-founder of Rotterdam-based architecture studio MVRDV and The Why Factory. Winy Maas gave us a super interesting view on housing and architecture all over the world. Also about Bo-Kaap in Cape Town where he went the day before.”

Isabel Mager
“Isabel Mager is an investigative and critical designer based in the Netherlands. Her work investigates culture and structures of power. Isabel showed the result of 5000 times the amount of tasks that are done manually along the assembly of the high-tech products of Apple. In one of the photos you can see the stacks of materials manually made by one employee in one day. Design within globalised capitalism runs the risk of generating harm.”
