Artist and filmmaker Douwe Dijkstra links absurdity with reality and, in reverse, makes this reality absurd. His short film ‘Démontable’, about the absurd contradiction of our daily routines and the world news, visualized by a war outbreak on a kitchen table, was nominated for a Golden Calf during the Dutch Film Festival in Utrecht.

In the Go Short Film Festival video identity ‘Don’t Blink’, the shots merge together fluidly and here he first started experimenting with green screens, a tool he now uses frequently and has become kind of his trademark.

Another very interesting and well-executed project is ‘Voor Film’, a semi-documentary in which Dijkstra follows a wide range of film audiences analysing their awkward rituals of watching a movie. It reveals how people experience this medium with all their sensory impairments, religion opinions, or love sickness.

In ‘Green Screen Gringo’ he uses the green screen in full force. Behind a green screen, a foreigner finds his way in an enchanting and yet turbulent Brazil. The streets are a stage for politics, art and affection, so a gringo can only watch. The result is a mix-tape portrait of modern-day Brazil seen through the eyes of a visitor.
