Driving Dutch Design – Dorian Kingma & Myrthe Krepel

By 15-08-2020

ONE WEEK ABOUT Driving Dutch Design by curators Patrick Aarts Sen (BNO) and Katja Lucas (DDF)

Driving Dutch Design (DDD) is a program of ABN AMRO, Beroepsorganisatie Nederlandse Ontwerpers (BNO) and Dutch Design Foundation that helps talented designers get started in the world of entrepreneurship. Dorian Kingma & Myrthe Krepel are one of them.

SMELT makes space for conversation. Through installations, objects and conversational tools SMELT makes sensitive topics accessible for everyone to talk about. Challenges in society such as street harassment, drug use and the ‘stikstofcrisis’ are translated into conversations in which themes such as purpose, intimacy and freedom are central. Anyone can participate in these conversations. By engaging people in different ways of conversation, SMELT wants us to look at each other and the challenges of modern society with new eyes.

Design studio SMELT consists of Dorian Kingma and Myrthe Krepel. Dorian graduated in 2017 from the master Integrated Product Design at TU Delft and Myrthe graduated in 2018 from the master Design for Interaction at TU Delft.

Burn-out bikers (2020)
SMELT visits a farmer every month, cycling from Rotterdam together with designer Nicky Liebregts. The food system in which the city demands and the farmer supplies, is the topic of the conversation. How is the relationship between these two? Can it be improved?

FAUX PAS (2019)
FAUX PAS is an ongoing research into flirting in public space. How do we want to engage with one another on the street? Flirtlab is an installation in which people can playfully experiment with flirting.

“Driving Dutch Design helped us to build the confidence to go from part-time to full-time working on SMELT. The masterclasses help us every time to consciously and actively develop our company.”
