Driving Dutch Design – Inderjeet Sandhu

By 17-08-2021

ONE WEEK ABOUT Driving Dutch Design by curators Patrick Aarts Sen (BNO) and Katja Lucas (DDF)

Driving Dutch Design is the professionalisation and networking programme of ABN AMRO, Beroepsorganisatie Nederlandse Ontwerpers (BNO) and Dutch Design Foundation (DDF) that helps talented designers get started in the world of entrepreneurship. Inderjeet Sandhu is one of them.

The Home
My autonomous work is often blurring the lines of different disciplines, where I gradually build on my personal feeling of home, belonging and dis-belonging from a diasporic position. By using subversive humour and bringing objects, symbols or different materials together, I mix separate environments and create an enriched space raising questions about social and cultural issues. At all times these questions are based upon the personal experience of growing up bi-culturally. The memory of the ‘Indian living room’ as ‘the inside’ and dutch culture as ‘the outside’ contrast to the home, inform my design methods of mixing  opposing references in my objects.

By shuffling around characteristic features as shape, symbolism, materiality and construction the objects are freed from their previous social and historical construct and reinterpreted into objects for contemplation and provocation. Aimed at rethinking their value and relation to the original they have been derived from. The actions involved always, in one way or another, challenge fixed rules, values and norms and aim to provoke an existing order.

Driving Dutch Design
The Driving Dutch Design program and its masterclasses gave me the opportunity to investigate what the commons themes are in my work. It has allowed me to create a clearer message in what I want to communicate with my objects. This has resulted in creating a template which through conversation with my coach now acts as tool that helps me in deciding which new ideas to develop further and which not.
