Driving Dutch Design – Jeffrey Heiligers

By 11-08-2020

ONE WEEK ABOUT Driving Dutch Design by curators Patrick Aarts Sen (BNO) and Katja Lucas (DDF)

Driving Dutch Design (DDD) is a program of ABN AMRO, Beroepsorganisatie Nederlandse Ontwerpers (BNO) and Dutch Design Foundation that helps talented designers get started in the world of entrepreneurship. Jeffrey Heiligers is one of them.

Taking a critical look at the current industrial making process
Quantity over quality is our current standard. If something breaks, we often don’t know how to fix it, so it’s thrown away. The current system of mass production needs to be drastically reassessed. Do you know how the products you use are made?

Most projects by Studio Jeffrey Heiligers are a collaboration between different experts to ensure the quality of the work. His project Posture, for example, used technical insight from physiotherapist Tanya Haes-Verhoeven. Using such input, he is able to re-evaluate the technology and crafts used in the manufacturing process, resulting in new methods of making. In most of his works the construction is either literally exposed or the user is given the pieces to make the product themselves. This allows them to have a better understanding of the fabrication process and gives them valuable knowledge on how to maintain their product.

Jeffrey Heiligers: “As a driver in the Driving Dutch Design 2020 program I’ve learned to better understand what I do and how to structure my business. Next to meeting peers and working together towards a collective exhibition, I’ve begun some interesting collaborations with some other Drivers. These will be on display during Dutch Design Week 2020.”
