Driving Dutch Design – Thomas & Jurgen

By 14-08-2020

ONE WEEK ABOUT Driving Dutch Design by curators Patrick Aarts Sen (BNO) and Katja Lucas (DDF)

Driving Dutch Design (DDD) is a program of ABN AMRO, Beroepsorganisatie Nederlandse Ontwerpers (BNO) and Dutch Design Foundation that helps talented designers get started in the world of entrepreneurship. Thomas & Jurgen are one of them.

Thomas & Jurgen is an experimental design studio based in Rotterdam. Together we explore, combine and create visual content both on commission as well as on our own initiative. Image research is at the heart of our design practice. With each assignment we are looking for suitable combinations between material, media and technology in order to be able to develop new and idiosyncratic visual language

Based on the core values of jazz, we developed a creative method that puts improvisation at the heart of the research phase of a design process. We use a theme, word or association to draw up rules, which we apply together with different improvisation techniques during so-called Visual Jam.

During contiguous short “sessions” we work with what emerges in the moment — every jam arises from elements of the previous one. After the sessions we put the successful jams together and analyze them for visual and/or conceptual discoveries. From here we start our design process.

Ever since the start of our collaboration, we have been balancing on the intersection of graphic design and visual work that is experimental in nature. Driving Dutch Design has helped us to decide once and for all. From now on, we want to focus as much as possible on (self-initiated) assignments in which our visual qualities prevail.
