Driving Dutch Design – Tjitske Storm

By 08-08-2022

ONE WEEK ABOUT Driving Dutch Design by curators Patrick Aarts Sen (BNO) and Katja Lucas (DDF)

Driving Dutch Design is the professionalisation and networking programme of ABN AMRO, Beroepsorganisatie Nederlandse Ontwerpers (BNO) and Dutch Design Foundation (DDF) that helps talented designers get started in the world of entrepreneurship. Tjitske Storm is one of them.

Tjitske Storm (1984) works as a surface pattern and textile designer, mainly for the use in interior and products. Her style reflects a dynamic symbiosis of opposite worlds, visible in bold geometric and organic compositions and the implementation of digital techniques and tactile crafts. Through exploring and interchanging these contradictions she aims to signify both the unity and the diversity of life.

In commissioned projects Tjitske holds the perfect balance between her own eclectic style and her clients identity or assignment. By mixing these values with contemporary design tendencies and relevant inspiration she is able to surprise clients with bespoke and authentic designs.

In 2009 Tjitske graduated with a Bachelor in Fashion Design at the Amsterdam Fashion Institute. During these studies she became passionate about patterns, prints and textiles, hence her collections were mainly focused on the development of these. Directly after her graduation she started her own design practice working on diverse design for fashion and lifestyle. Also she gained valuable experience through her work as editor and stylist for the international WeAr Magazine.

From 2014 – 2016 Tjitske worked for Marcel Wanders Studio, developing surface pattern and graphic design for bespoke product and interior projects. Thereafter she continued working independently on custom interior projects for brands like Moooi, Ted Baker, Kek Amsterdam and Revised. During these years she traveled a lot, partly being ‘the digital nomad’ and partly working within local interior companies in Cape Town, South Africa and Luanda, Angola.

At the moment, Tjitske is living in Oosterwold – an eco-village nearby Amsterdam – where she works on commissioned and self-initiated projects. During Dutch Design Week 2022 she will present her new collection including 4 eye-catching handtufted and woven tapestries.
