15 Years Dutch Design Awards
Dutch Design Awards (DDA) celebrates the future. The open call for Dutch Design Awards 2017 announces the 15th edition of the most prestigious design prizes in the country. DDA has rewarded Dutch designers since 2003 for their most impressive, innovative, ground-breaking and sometimes world-improving projects. In this anniversary year DDA celebrates the future with a new batch of designs, publishing the archive and telling the story behind 15 years of the best of Dutch design. Today we show some of the winners from 2013.

Iris van Herpen – Voltage
Voltage is Iris van Herpen’s fourth haute couture collection in which she explores the ‘electricity of the body’, in other words, the strength and movement of the body.

Live and Mobility Development – Blocker
The Blocker braking system ensures that the brakes of a wheelchair automatically block the wheelchair as soon as the occupant rises from his/her chair. Photo’s: Toon Hendriks

Philips design – DesignLine HD TV
The DesignLine 2013 is a 3D Smart TV with a 1400 Hz Full HD resolution. Without cabinet, TV stand, leg or even frame, the TV seems no more than an immense sheet of glass that goes from black to transparent.

Christien Meindertsma – Het Verzameld Breiwerk van Loes Veenstra uit de 2e Carnissestraat
Since 1955, Loes Veenstra from Rotterdam has knit five hundred jumpers. Museum Rotterdam discovered this collection of never worn pullovers. Christien Meindertsma then compiled a book about them and made a cheerful flash mob in the district where Loes Veenstra lives.

Irma Boom – Chanel No.5
For the exhibition No. 5 Culture Chanel at the Palais de Tokyo in Paris, Irma Boom made a book consisting of 500 pages that are blind embossed throughout. Because of this, the content is just like perfume: you do not see it, but it is there.

Studio Moniker – Do Not Touch
‘Do Not Touch’ is an interactive music video clip realized through crowd sourcing. During the track ‘Kilo’ by Light Light, the viewer sees an increasing number of cursors swarming across the screen. Each time someone follows the instructions on the screen at donottouch.org, the cursor movements are recorded. The result: a very witty video in which social impacts are registered.

Fabrique ism Q42 – Rijksmuseum website
On the new website for the Rijksmuseum, when you open the site, the full-page images hit your eyes right from the start. The options, ‘Explorer the collection’ and the ‘Rijksstudio’ gives the visitor a good overview of the entire collection of the museum. In the design, the ‘tablet first’ principle is applied, with big buttons and wide navigation bars. This makes the website especially suitable for smartphone and tablet use.

WAAG Society – FairPhone
Fairphone is redesigning the smartphone. From product to processes, the social enterprise is redefining supply chains and ultimately our economic system by putting social values first.

Arne Hendriks – The Incredible Shrinking Man
Human growth has become a synonym for our Western welfare society, but is it sustainable in the long term? With The Incredible Shrinking Man, Arne Hendriks investigates what the impact on the world would be if people would only be 50 cm tall. Then more people would fit on the same surface, and could manage with less food.

Heijmans – Best Client
Construction company Heijmans shows a clear vision on the future by involve designers and architects at an early stage in the development and renewal projects and services. The company collaborates with specialists from various design disciplines and thereby allows crossovers occur. Heijmans realizes within this context, that work with different specialists is crucial to innovate and create new opportunities.

Onix Architecten – Toren van Uitwierde
The voluminous staircase designed by Onix adds to the enrichment of the thirteenth-century church tower of Uitwierde. Clashes between the original features and the modern staircase make climbing the stairs a challenge and an unforgettable experience. Photo’s: Peter van der Knoop

Bierman Henket Architecten – Uitbreiding Museum de Fundatie
The new building volume on top of the neoclassical Museum de Fundatie has a whitish blue skin with a large glass window facing the city. Its coating consists of 55,000 three-dimensional tiles, produced by Royal Tichelaar Makkum. Photo’s: Joep Jacobs

For Femke Herregraven, graphic design is a tool to investigate our complex society and to research the power structures therein. With the attitude of a journalist, she denounces problems and inequalities.

Ulf Moritz – BNO Piet Zwart Award
Cosmopolitan Ulf Moritz collects his ideas from all over the world and translates them into convincing collections in which elegant aesthetics are balanced with commercial goals. His designs show a recognizable signature, consisting of a diversity of style elements in combination with surprising materials and innovative techniques.
