Dutch Design

ONE WEEK ABOUT Masterly – The Dutch in Milano by Nicole Uniquole, founder and curator of Masterly.

Masterly shows the breadth of the Dutch design landscape.  But also a diversity of materials that designers work with. And that is possible here, because the Palazzo Francesco Turati is huge.

After climbing the huge historic marble staircase, we meet a new initiative by designer and artist Claudy Jongstra. Where wool is a disposable product nowadays, she shows how it can be done differently. Together with social design label Regained and Floris Schoonderbeek, she is showing great new applications.

Interior designer Karel Bodegom presents his museum showcases made of steel, produced by the Pillen Group. Here they serve as a backdrop for Barbara Nanning’s glass objects. I am also using these display cases to present objects from the Royal Collections and the collection of the French jewelry house Mellerio in Fulda, Germany (to be seen in the Design & Dynasty exhibition from June 18).

As every year, students from the Wood and Furnishings College present themselves at Masterly. An enthusiastic group of talents looking for producers for their graduation collections. The Palazzo also features impressive textile designs by Lola van Praag Halle Design and Taftique. In the courtyard, glassblower Marco Lopulalan displays his new collection of Monet & Dali vases. In the same space hangs beautiful work by photographer Dick Schoenmakers, shot using a vertical panorama technique.
