Studio Airport: “Emergence Magazine is a quarterly online publication with an annual printed edition. Each issue features a theme explored through innovative digital media as well as the written word. As we experience the desecration of our lands and waters, the extinguishing of species and the loss of our sacred connection with the earth, we look to emerging stories. In them we can find the timeless connections between ecology, culture and spirituality.”

“The design challenge for the visual identity of Emergence Magazine was to make sure it didn’t limit itself to a static style, while remaining recognizable for its audience. The most important elements of this digital identity are its typefaces. We combined the old with the new to provide levity and warmth to the design without needing to drive the entire aesthetic.”

“Within the magazine it’s important to experiment visually with different design solutions to give more strength to the variety of stories. After all, a virtual reality experience has other storytelling needs than a poem or an essay. The solution to this is to always have space for new additional typefaces and use of colour. Throughout the magazine, imagery and illustrations are approached in different ways. To make sure everything still feels like an Emergence Magazine design, we use our keen eye for detail.”

“‘Corn Tastes Better on the Honor System’ is one of the stories published in Emergence Magazine. In this multimedia essay, Robin Wall Kimmerer takes us through the 9000-year history of maize, reflecting on what has been severed in our once sacred and reciprocal relationship to this plant.”
