Emmy’s World

By 14-12-2017

An elementary component of Hanne von der Woude’s portrait series is her intensive observation of the behaviour of humans in their environment. The Dutch photographer mostly discovers her subjects in the street. This was also the case with Ben, whom she followed with her camera for many years. The photographic results of this intensive encounter are presented in the series ‘Emmy’s World’.

Van der Woude’s artistic work is characterized by long-term projects. She places great importance on a holistic approach of her protagonists. She becomes intensively and at the same time carefully involved in the people she portrays and in their living environments. She observes, empathizes and wins their trust.

In ‘Emmy’s World’, she used analogue photography, which allows her to photograph with greater concentration, thoughtfulness and awareness. She sees this as a component of a purposeful deceleration that she became aware of with Ben and Emmy.
