Fashion + Design Festival Arnhem

By 03-06-2021

This year the Fashion + Design Festival Arnhem together with designers, artists and partners looks how the desire for meaning or PURPOSE manifests itself in fashion and design. And how the fashion system is reinventing itself, after the reset. 50 fashion labels give their vision on the theme and tell how they make the world a little bit more beautiful and fairer with their designs and creations.

The festival is all about PURPOSE, but certainly also about RE-PURPOSE. “Fashion is very much in development and this is reflected in the contributions of the many designers involved,” says creative director Sebastiaan Kramer. The festival zooms in on how fashion and product design responds to the changing focus from material to immaterial happiness and meaning, using the ten dimensions of the Kabbalah. “The ten dimensions show that there is no single answer to what the ‘purpose’ of fashion and design is”.

The FDFA offers a high-quality festival from 3 June to 3 July 2021, in which online and offline events alternate and complement each other in a hybrid form. Every week, a number of dimensions are highlighted from the overarching theme of PURPOSE, with exhibitions, lectures, events and performances.

Opening week: EQUALITY & CONSUMPTION

The opening of the festival month is on Thursday 3 June. In the first week, the FDFA looks at the influence of the dimensions of consumption and equality on the fashion and design system through digital events. The festival answers questions like where does the inner urge to consume come from, and what does the future of retail look like. During the opening event on 3 June, moderator Georgette Koning of Mirror Mirror will talk to director Riƫlle Schoeman and creative director Sebastiaan Kramer about the content and theme of the festival.

On 3 June, the FDFA hosts three videos on the FDFA website in collaboration with Glamcult, in which designers Kevin Pleiter, Sarah Aphrodite Stolwijk and Schepers Bosman talk to moderator Aynouk Tan about their vision and work, within the dimensions of consumption and equality. On 6 June the FDFA launches a How they create video with the designer duo Peterson + Stoop.

In the experiment Project Marinero, fashion designer Jef Montes investigates the influence of weather conditions on the formation of garments, through an installation on the roof of Rozet from 3 June to 3 July. Jef has developed yarns that organically change shape as a result of weather conditions such as temperature change, rain and sunshine.

On 8 June the exhibition WEAVING WITH WASTE starts. It is an installation by fashion designer Diederik Verbakel (*DIED*) and came about in collaboration with the Textielmuseum Bocholt. This museum produces cotton fabrics for dish cloths, on old weaving machines from the 1900s.

To celebrate the opening weekend of the Fashion + Design Festival Arnhem (FDFA) 2021, the Arnhem entrepreneurs will open their doors for a special Shopping Three Days from 3 – 5 June. During this three-day event, the Arnhem entrepreneurs will provide visitors with something extra: from a goodie bag to extra discounts, from free styling advice to a special FDFA cocktail.
