Finders Keepers

By 04-10-2017

For the exhibition ‘Finders Keepers’, MacGuffin Magazine gathered more than 5000 objects from more than 40 collections in a grand parade of everyday items ranging from razor blades to jeans and from ropes to flights of stairs.

The New Institute shows (private) collections of a unique size and specialization. All over the world collections are traced. There are collections of artists and designers such as Seth Siegelaub, herman de vries, Peter Marigold, Louise Harpman, Jason Denham and the British collector Charles Brooking, who for Finders Keepers was prepared to temporarily part with thirty flights of stairs that have been salvaged from buildings designated for demolition.

Brooking and a number of other collectors talk about the collections in a series of video portraits showing the natural habitat of the collections. On the occasion of the exhibition, the British architect and design critic Sam Jacob has written an essay on collections and the life of things: ‘Life Amongst Things’.

With the exhibition, the editors of MacGuffin, Kirsten Algera and Ernst van der Hoeven, have given shape to the concept that design is more than constantly inventing and creating new products. According to MacGuffin, finding, organizing, and preserving objects is an equally interesting part of the design practice.
