OBJECT Rotterdam – FirstHands

By 21-05-2022

New design platform FirstHands showcases ‘forgotten’ Dutch design

Firsthands is a new platform on which Dutch designers offer their unique objects. These include original prototypes, artistic one-offs and other pieces from the personal archives of famous Dutch product designers. The festive launch is with a presentation at the design fair Object Rotterdam from Friday 20 to Sunday 22 May.

Changing design collection on Firsthands.nl
Many designers have ‘forgotten pieces’ lying around in their studio or storage. These may be prototypes, semi-finished products or a product with an experimental use of materials or a different color. Another possibility is objects that were specially made for a presentation at the Salone del Mobile in Milan, for example, or the last item in a series. With FirstHands there is finally a platform for these unique objects.

These pieces are offered on the website Firsthands.nl. The bilingual website – in Dutch and English – targets an international audience of design enthusiasts. The pieces are selected in close consultation with the designers. The range is broad and the fixed prices vary from around 200 euros to 5000 euros. The price of rare pieces with museum value will be on request. The mediation between designers and the buyers of the objects is done by Tim Erpenbeek de Wolff, who also runs the vintage platform &DeWolff.

The untold stories of Dutch design
All pieces on Firsthands.nl are described in detail. There are also interviews with the designers to read. FirstHands is much more than a sales channel. The unique objects can offer surprising insights into the oeuvre of a designer or illuminate a specific snapshot. In addition to unique objects, models, framed design sketches or material samples will eventually be offered. The objects will be selected by the well-known design journalist Jeroen Junte.

FirstHands offers a representative cross-section of contemporary Dutch design. Top international designers such as Richard Hutten, Tejo Remy and Studio Makkink & Bey offer authentic prototypes and unknown items. Designers from the next generation include Studio Wieki Somers, Chris Kabel, Pieke Bergmans and Kiki van Eijk. The youngest batch of designers graduated after 2010 is also represented, including Lex Pott and Studio ReNS.
