Floating home

By 21-01-2021

Floating home by i29 architects is part of Schoonschip, a floating village of 46 households. Based on an urban plan by Space&Matter, over one hundred residents moved to a revitalized canal.

The floating village is energy self-sufficient and employs circular building practices. It has its own smart grid to which all homes are connected to share energy. Within the boundaries of each water plot, every home has a unique architecture design. All inhabitants chose their own architect.

i29: “The client challenged us to maximize the use of space within the boundaries of the plot. Moreover, the floating home is extremely energy efficient, eco-friendly, built with a small ecological footprint and a tight budget. It has a pitched roof that is turned diagonally. In the floor plan this results in an optimization of usable space and a beautiful terrace but also gives the home its characteristic architectural design.”

“The floating home is characterized by a dynamic variation of spaces both inside and outside. All areas are in open connection with the atrium, which comprises three floors. The layout is extended with a split-level connection to a loggia terrace just above water level. Views appear and disappear while moving through the home. The top-level living area has an adjacent semi-closed terrace.”
