Floriadepaviljoen Amsterdam – Almere

By 09-10-2021

Overtreders W, de Onkruidenier, garden designer Joost Emmerik and Kossmanndejong are jointly designing the pavilion ‘The Voice of Urban Nature’ for the municipalities of Almere and Amsterdam at the Floriade Expo 2022. The pavilion, garden and exhibition are designed as one integrated spatial and layered narrative.

The Voice of Urban Nature
With this joint entry Almere and Amsterdam want to show how they, together with their residents, are building the green city of the future. To answer the question of how to build cities with nature, as an equal partner of mankind, they want to give nature its own voice: The Voice of Urban Nature.

The team has chosen not to design a separate pavilion with an accompanying garden, but to cover the entire surface with a spatial structure including garden and exhibition. A structure through which visitors can wander and have many multi-voiced and inspiring encounters.

Biobased and Circular
The pavilion will be built of 100% biobased building materials. The raw materials for it are sourced in the region as much as possible: the walls are made of hemp lime and Irish lime from Almere fiber hemp, Amsterdam’s Indian lime and lime roasted from Zeeland oyster shells and Amsterdam’s tap water lime. The pink color of the walls is extracted from madder. The wood structure consists of Dutch wood from trees released during the maintenance of nature reserves, and preserved with a coating based on linseed oil and fungi. Biobased and circular raw materials are also used as much as possible for all exhibition elements. Biobased construction can close local cycles in this way, and strengthen both local ecosystems and the regional economy.

After the Expo, the pavilion will be partly relocated in Almere and partly in Amsterdam and reused for a period of at least fifteen years. At the end of the lifespan of the modular building elements, all parts of the pavilion are biodegradable.
