Robert F. Kennedy’s Funeral Train – The People’s View

By 08-03-2019

After being voted one of the Best Dutch Book Designs, Robert F. Kennedy’s Funeral Train – The People’s View was submitted to the international jury of ‘Schönste Bücher aus aller Welt’. The book design by Jeremy Jansen was awarded the Gold Medal at this prestigious competition.

Robert F. Kennedy’s Funeral Train – The People’s View offers an immersive experience of a day in the life of up to one million grieving Americans, who watched RFK’s funeral train make its way to its final destination (June 8, 1968). The continuity of the seemingly endless 8-hour train journey is emphasized by the use of Japanese folded pages. White pages are interspersed with sections of black pages, echoing the steady rhythm of the train. On the black pages, certain time passages of the train journey are held under a microscope. Every aspect of the book design is geared towards drawing the reader in to join the people gathered by the rail tracks.

Jeremy Jansen has a graphic design studio in Amsterdam and works primarily with artists and cultural institutions. In 2017, he won a Golden Letter at this same competition. In addition, Jeremy is a lecturer at the Graphic Design Department of ArtEZ in Arnhem and teaches design curating and writing at the Design Academy Eindhoven.
