Glittery slime dresses and costumes made of foil

By 20-05-2020

For the upcoming season, artist Bart Hess signed up for the National Ballet poster campaign. Hess was educated at the Design Academy in Eindhoven, where he focused on everything on and around the body. He presents his often transient creations as performances, which he captures in alienating digital images.

In 2017 Hess had a solo exhibition at the Design Museum Den Bosch, where he drew the attention of Els van der Plas (general director National Opera and Ballet). Bart Hess: “This was the first time I worked with classical dancers, on ballet shoes. That’s how I discovered all kinds of new body postures.” In the campaign images for the opening gala and the Young Patrons Gala, Hess’s signature is perhaps the strongest present. “I made the costumes for these images myself.” For the opening gala this became a costume of blackout foil for cars.

Next season marks the 50th anniversary of the death of the composer Igor Stravinsky. Stravinsky Fairy Tales and Stravinsky Festival pay tribute to the composer. For Stravinsky Fairy Tales, which will include Alexei Ratmansky’s Firebird, the poster prominently features a dancer in the famous firebird costume. Around it are all kinds of other firebirds, in costumes designed by Hess himself. “For this I used the red foil that you encounter on road signs. The effect is that of flashes of light.”
