GLUE amsterdam connected by design

By 18-09-2020

Three-day report by Anne Pieterse – project manager GLUE

The three-day design route GLUE Amsterdam connected by design starts today. GLUE is a new initiative to connect the city and its designers. The initiators David Heldt, Janine de Jong and Guus van Maarschalkerweerd felt that there was too little connection within the Amsterdam design sector. Through GLUE they want to stick the sector together, connecting all the design ‘islands’ in Amsterdam.

More than 80 locations including designs, architects, brands, showrooms, galleries, hubs, makerspaces and museums will open their doors this weekend. You can visit GLUE for lectures, workshops, exhibitions, book presentations and to simply get inspired.

Opening debate
GLUE kicked off the weekend with the debate ‘The designer and the city’ at the Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam. Host Andrew Makkinga had a lively conversation with a diverse range of speakers including Mina Abouzahra, Reinder Bakker, Sheryl Leysner, Ruben Rive, Thami Schweichler and David Heldt. The main topic of the debate was the importance of creatives to Amsterdam, their contributions to the city and how this city can create conditions to keep these creatives in the city.

Due to the current situation the debate was not accessible for public. The debate was live-streamed and is accessible at www.glue.amsterdam/debate/

GLUE presents itself in an interesting timeframe. The initiators decided to continue with the first edition of GLUE even though the current situation makes it hard to organize events.

“GLUE marks the beginning of a new era in which corona defines our way of living, working and doing business and is a response to busy trade fairs, where visitors queue in masses to see a presentation. During GLUE, every visitor can go to the locations by feet, public transport or by bicycle. “Coronaproof” the visitors will be able to explore the hidden gems in Amsterdam.
