Grace of Glaze: Ceramics with a gradient glaze

By 11-05-2020

“Grace of Glaze is the result of a material research on how to make porcelain and glaze work together. Usually a ceramic piece is first designed and then any glaze can be applied. There’s no interaction between the two materials, it’s a layer on top of pure form – almost as if the glaze is merely decoration.”

“By using coloured porcelain and semi-transparent coloured glazes I made them work together to create new colours. Changing the background of a glaze by changing the colour of the porcelain results in a different colour. With three colours of porcelain and 25 glazes, the grid explores these variations, but the possibilities are endless.”

“In addition, the shape of the pieces define the gradation of the colours. A sharp corner shows an abrupt change in colour, while a shallow curve results in a gradient showing all the shades in between.”
