Graphic Days Torino – Demo festival

By 19-05-2021

ONE WEEK ABOUT Graphic Days by Dennis Elbers, founder of Graphic Matters and guest-curator of Graphic Days ‘Eyes on the Netherlands’.

After almost 120 hours in Turin, it is time to go home again. At the airport, it is clearly noticeable that people deal with design differently here. The signage consists of a jumble of styles. Supplemented by random A4 sheets about corona measures, which clearly show that not everyone is a designer.

Something also strikes me at the stations. Not nearly as many poster frames have been replaced by screens as in the Netherlands. The ‘moving poster’ is not yet on the rise here. There is a lot of experimentation going on in the Netherlands. Among others by Studio Dumbar in cooperation with operator Exterion. Thanks to the Demo Festival, other designers were also given temporary access to the screens at Amsterdam Central Station.

In Turin, a selection of this work can be seen in a dark room. This creates a different experience than a busy station and elevates the work to the status of art. This is reinforced by the fact that many designers have exchanged the idea of the poster for visual experiment. The short videos are attractive to look at, but do not always contain a message. Sometimes I feel as lost in this space as I do at the airport.

Graphic Days was an experience. Not just as a happy moment after more than a year of corona, but mainly thanks to the warm welcome by the organisation and the volunteers involved. In the coming days, all time slots are fully booked and many Italian visitors will have their ‘Eyes on the Netherlands’. Ciao!
